About the Department

As governor, Lujan Grisham has implemented a series of evidence-based policies aimed at transforming New Mexico's public education system, expanding the state's economy to include more high-quality employment opportunities and preserving New Mexico's air, land and water. In 2019, she oversaw one of the most productive legislative sessions in state history, signing a broad package of bipartisan bills into law, notably a historic investment in public education and a landmark transition to clean energy.

U.S. Supreme Court approves Rio Grande compact settlement – Agreement ends 13-year interstate dispute

SANTA FE – The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday approved a historic settlement ending more than a decade of litigation over Rio Grande water rights, shielding New Mexico taxpayers from billions of dollars in potential liability and establishing a long-term water management framework for communities, farms and businesses across the Lower Rio Grande Basin.

Proclamations issued by the Governor are intended to honor, celebrate, or raise awareness of a noteworthy event or significant issue for the citizens of New Mexico. Proclamations are provided by the Governor's Office of Constituent Services according to a set of guidelines. These public service documents are strictly honorary and are not legally binding. All proclamation requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

The New Mexico Constitution gives the Governor authority to grant "pardons and reprieves" for most convictions for offenses under state law. However, the Governor does not have authority to grant pardons or any other forms of clemency for convictions under municipal or federal laws. The Governor also does not have authority to expunge or seal arrest and/or conviction records.
